With an accent on luxury

Another showroom for furniture? Yes... But La Dolce Vita at Royapettah tries to be different, in that it offers exclusive pieces for those with a taste for extravagance.

Integrating art and interior, the "furniture boutique" showcases a collection of coordinated living and bedroom sets, ornate study tables, carved cabinets etc. The piece-de-resistance is the innovative "crab sofa set" priced over Rs. 1 lakh. Shaped in the form of a mega crab, the sturdy set feels extremely soft. The four sofas and the centre table (also shaped like a crawling crab) are each made of single pieces of wood.

In keeping with the current metal mania, La Dolce Vita also has a range of exclusive metal furniture with varied finishes to suit different decors. Some of the creations are given a dull finish for that much-desired antique look. The inventive flair of craftsmanship is evident in the way finer details like the tassels on the dressing table have been executed. Another feature that's truly remarkable is the sturdiness of the furniture (just try pushing the small side table!).

As for the teak wood drawing room sets, study desks or corner cabinets, the highlight is the quality of wood and the carvings. With a dash of innovation, two-colour carvings (wood in different finishes) have also been tried out. The rolling and sliding-topped desks (replicas of antiques) are true reminders of an era when craftsmanship was celebrated. The pieces come with unimaginable concealed draws! (Rs. 20,000 upward). The upholstery used too is exotic, and, on order imported fabrics are also used.

Obviously, the collection is very up-market - for those with sprawling homes and lavish pockets. To cater for the needs of time-pressed urbanites, the boutique is open on Sundays too. Want to live- a la dolce vita? Check out the collection at No. 110, Gaudiya Mutt Road, Royapettah, phone 98410 26706/8131419/8132159.
