IT'S NATURAL... it's ethnic... it's breathe easy... it's in. Khadi, the national fabric, has never lost its popularity despite a host of new fabrics flooding the fashion scene. Ten years ago, the fabric catapulted to the arena of high fashion. In its various avatars — cotton, polykhadi or silk — khadi lends itself to both Indian and Western outfits. What's more, khadi spells comfort.
So much so, it has caught the imagination of big names in the world of couture, be it Ritu Beri, Ritu Kumar or Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla.
As trendy and comfortable as khadi is the handloom fabric. In earthy hues and ethnic motifs, handlooms are perfect for all seasons. And like khadi, handlooms too translate beautifully into salwar kurtas and Indo-Westerns.
Bringing the natural fabrics together is the Festival of Khadi and The Handloom, at 7W, the boutique for casual wear. The fest, organised as part of the nationwide khadi promotion, is split into two exhibitions.
The first exhibition, on till February 20, will showcase the young designers Sunaina Suneja, Bharat Laxman, Prana, Creative Bee, Sangita Patel and Sridevi. The collection boasts of a range of elegant salwar kurta ensembles and Indo-westerns in classic cuts, targeted at the woman of today.
The second exhibition, which will be on from February 20 to 28, will feature designer Neetika Swarup, who has worked extensively with handloom weaves. The outfits come in exciting colour combinations, and in a multitude of textures and weaves.
The exhibitions will be on at 7W, 1st floor of Apparao Galleries, 7, Wallace Garden, 3rd street Ph: 8272226/8223726.
