Craft turns contemporary
In its endeavour to work with craft communities, every month Dakshinachitra hosts a prominent NGO working with craft groups in the areas of craft development, production and marketing.
This month, the Orissa Rural Development and Marketing Society or ORMAS, an autonomous body, which comes under the purview of the Department of Panchayati Raj, Government of Orissa, brings to Chennai the craft skills of Orissa, modified to suit contemporary lifestyle.
The ORMAS collection includes the popular lac work fashioned into colourful toys, animals and birds along with lovely stone figures and icons crafted out of red granite in the typical Oriya stone craftsmanship.
Orissa's wealth of ikkat textiles, representative of a vibrant living tradition, can be seen in Sambhalpuri, Kataki and Bomkai saris and dupattas.
Perfect for summerwear, Orissa's typically bordered ikkats have become a fashion statement throughout India.
Also available at the Dakshinachitra crafts mela are colourful Pipli patchwork items which include wall hangings, table cloth, bags, satchels, office folders, purses and so on.
Vibrant and colourful, this temple craft has come a long way with suitable design inputs and product development.
Also available at the ORMAS exhibition-cum-sale are lovely patachitra wall hangings, greeting cards and bookmarks done with delicate detailing for which Orissa craftsmen are so famous.
Khweda mats and boxes, another rural craft, are also showcased at the exhibition in a variety of sizes.
The exhibition of Orissa's crafts is on till February 28 at Dakshinachitra, East Coast Road, Muttukadu.
