Haute styles for homes

Basix, the Delhi-based company's European furniture collection of sofas can add drama to your drawing room.

ATTRACTIVE AND AFFORADABLE... are the catchwords that would lure customers to a range of imported furniture, brought to Chennai by "Basix", a Delhi-based company that focuses on style and quality. The Basix collection is on show at Kipling and Company Arts Pvt. Ltd, 50/37, M.G.R. Road, Kalakshetra Colony, Besant Nagar. Besides furniture, maps and prints of Asia, India and Chennai are also available.

Foreign travel and the exposure to the Western media have made urban upwardly mobile Indian consumers aware of furniture styles abroad. But, most often, to acquire even a few pieces becomes a prohibitively expensive proposition, as they have to be imported. And this is where Basix has stepped in - the company has for the first time made modern European furniture available to domestic buyers.

The brainchild of New York-based Puru Das and Brian DeMuro, Basix was started for style-conscious people, who want to do up their homes with furniture that are haute, durable and purse-friendly. The catalyst for the venture was a visit to India, where the two discovered the absence of well-priced, contemporary furniture of good quality.

Basix' debut line consists of European designed upholstered sofas and sofa beds, priced Rs. 19,000 upwards. The sofas are upholstered with Italian cotton covers that are detachable to facilitate cleaning.

The company plans to expand its home furniture range by including dining and bedroom sets. These too will be sourced from abroad and will soon be made available all over the country.
