Shimmering splendour

Varadaram Silks, known for its classic designs and traditional weaves is all set for its much sought after annual sale.

VARADARAM SILKS has always been known for its quality and traditional designs in `pattu' saris. Even while incorporating new designs to suit contemporary tastes, Prema Srinivasan of Varadaram's has retained the original beauty of the silk saris. She hails from a family, which has been manufacturing silks saris for many decades.

Full jacquard weaves, including blouses, are now in vogue, especially for weddings and are even worn by Christian brides. Old `baavanchi' borders, `rudraksham', `hamsams', `palum pazhamum' checks and `malarkodi' patterns in the classic colours have a timeless appeal. This collection is now available in pastel shades too.

A Benarasi effect has been brought into some of the `pattu saris'. Motifs like bridal couple, scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata and of goddesses on the `pallu' look ethnic and grand.

The silk cotton saris are equally irresistible. The borders and designs used on silk saris have been retained to give that rich silk effect.

The store is known for its annual near-cost-price sale, with goods passed on directly from the weaver to the customers.

The sale gets a good response from silk sari lovers, who come even from Tanjore, Trichy, Madurai and Bangalore. The weavers too are benefited as the money comes directly to them.

The store has tie-ups with rediff.com and Chennai bazaar. The sale is on from February 27 to March 4 at its premises on Harrington Road. Ph: 8266667.
