From the rich Benarasi to the mellow Pondur khadi, the two-day exhibition of saris and jewellery, on in the city, has something for everyone.

Some of the most evocative names in the country's textile tradition come together in an exhibition-cum-sale, which opens today at `The Mandapam', Hotel Chola Sheraton, Cathedral Road.
Organised by the Crafts Council of India (CCI), as part of its fund raising drive, the exhibition of saris, dress material and jewellery showcases the artistic flair of master weavers, craftspersons and designers.
From the fabulous Patola and Aashavali to the mellow Pondur khadi, from the exotic Baluchari and Dhakkai to elegant Maheshwari and tussar, from esoteric Bandini to vibrant block prints in silk and cotton, each sari is a masterpiece, its value reflected not so much in the price as in its impeccable craftsmanship and design.
Exquisitely woven, the Balucharis and Dhakkais cast a spell with their soft colours and typical motifs. Benarasi silks and cottons come in a wide range with gorgeous zari borders and pallavs, some with a mellow sprinkling of buttis and `amris'.
There are lovely Puttupakka silks and ikkats as well as embroidered tussars. The kasuti embroidery done on rich jewel toned saris beckons attention.
To beat the heat, one can choose from an arresting range of Chanderis and Kotas in block prints, Maheshwari and Mangalgiri and vegetable dyed block prints in delicate to bold motifs. For dressy evenings, there are the rich tussars along with Bagalkot and batik work done on Pashmina tussars and cottons.
Mastercraftsman Ishwarudu's hand painted Kalamkari saris reflect a centuries-old tradition, while Shiela Balaji's vegetable dyed creations spell magic with their muted perfection. And then, there is Jagada Rajappa's range of tribal cottons and Pondur khadis with zari and Mugha silk borders...
The jewellery section features striking platinum, diamond and gold pieces from Mumbai.
The CCI's exhibition of saris, fabric and jewellery, open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., ends tomorrow.
