Classic re-creations

MAGNIFICENT KASHMIRI silk and wool hand-knotted carpets can be seen at the Carpet Mela organised by Indo-Persian Carpets, which opens today at shop no. 2 and 3, C Block, Parsn Apartments, 432 T.T.K. Road, Chennai-18.

Specially woven in Srinagar for the mela each carpet is a work of art, a splendid configuration of floral and vine or geometric motifs, with a richness of composition and colour.

The variety of carpets in different sizes — from 10 ft. by 14 ft. and nine ft. by 12 ft. to two ft. by one ft. — represent an enticing spectrum.

There are classical Persian style carpets in brilliant baroque style, which recreates heavenly gardens, Mughal hunting scenes with a background of exotic flora and fauna, and compositions of harmonised geometric motifs speaking an older language of myths and symbols.

Carpet weavers from the valley demonstrate their incredible craft skills at the Carpet Mela. The carpets are being sold at very moderate prices.

Kirmaan, Humdaan, Bokhara, Tabriz, Isphahan, Artebil, Qum: one can take one's pick from any of these fabled carpet styles. The carpets vary from simple bordered Tabriz carpets to fields of paisley in rich jewel-like configurations.

The craftsmanship is flawless.

It might be added that the multitude of styles, motifs and colour combinations available at the Carpet Mela make it possible for everyone to find a carpet to suit his taste. Many of the carpets are reproductions of old museum pieces.
