"THIS STUNNING hybrid is truly a masterpiece... has a unique leaf shape and beautiful contrasting colour. The look of this hybrid is unparalleled.". That is how the citation for the silver and green A. Silverado, a hybrid indoor plant, reads. The plant was chosen as the `Best New Foliage Plant TPIE 2002' at the Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition (TPIE) in Florida. The TPIE is a premier trade show for tropical foliage in the world.
Developed by Chennai-based K.S.G.'s Farm and Nursery, it is the fourth hybrid to be introduced by an Indian company for the U.S. market. The nursery is the first from India to bag the award. The criterion for the selection includes form and shape, cold tolerance, low light performance, contrasting leaf colour, disease and pest resistance and performance in various pot sizes.
The K.S.G.'s Farm and Nursery had earlier introduced Aglaonema hybrids named A. Emerald Star, A. Jewel of India (both patented) and A. Silver Ribbion (applied for patent), collectively known as the `Stars of India'. The collection is a result of 15 years of breeding programme and research by the father-son duo, G. Parthasarathy and P. Mukundan.
The hybrids were developed after two years of strict trial and evaluation and after ensuring that they acquired the required appeal and beauty coupled with commercial production and horticultural attributes.
Incidentally, most hybrid Aglaonemas originated in Thailand.
