Revisiting Nazi times

City-based theatre group, Black Coffee, is all set to stage Martin Sherman's play, Bent.

BLACK COFFEE, the theatre group, known for its hard-hitting plays, is staging Martin Sherman's Bent at Alliance Francaise de Bangalore on March 18, 19, and 20.

Directed by Preetam Koilpillai, who has time and again managed to extract mind blowing performances from his cast and loves to play around with intimate theatre, this incisive play set in the Nazi regime lays bare a lesser known atrocity perpetuated by the Nazis during the 30s and 40s — the systematic and relentless persecution of the homosexuals.

The play revolves around the lives of three homosexual men, Max, Rudy, and Horst, as they flee from the Gestapo. Sherman, in his characteristic style, has written a brilliant expose of gay life during those times combining sharp text with stunning and evocative stagecraft. Moving from an apartment in Berlin to the notorious concentration camp of Dachau, the play glides effortlessly through intricate and intense scenes to a shattering climax. Bent was such a success as a theatrical production that it was produced as a movie with the same name by MGM Studios in 1997. The actors were Clive as Max, Lothaire Bluteau as Horst, Mick Jagger as Greta, Ian McKellen as Uncle Freddie, and Paul Bettany as the Captain.

The Bangalore production of the play features Vivek Madan, Ravi Prabhakar, Roshan Nair, and Rajeev Ravindranathan among others. Akshay Vijayan plays the flamboyant Greta. Rehearsals for the play started three weeks ago with gruelling sessions in the mornings, evenings, and sometimes through the day. And if the intensity at rehearsals is anything to go by, Bent is one production you don't want to miss.

Tickets priced at Rs. 80 are available at Supermarket, Brigade Road, and at Alliance Francaise's Caf de Paris. Student tickets at Rs. 50 are available at the venue on presentation of a valid student ID.
