In Delhi this week

THE FESTIVAL of colours is here. And with it, a host of musical shows that promise to liven up the spirits of Delhi. The India Habitat Centre is bubbling with activity this coming week. Presenting a light classical presentation of Hori, Kajri, Jhoola, Ghazal and Sufiana Kalaam on Holi eve will be Rekha Surya at 7 p.m. It ill be an evening of choreographies by Shahsidaran Nair on Saturday, as dancer Shashidharan Nair gives a performance as part of the HCL Concert Series.

At India International Centre, upcoming Kolkata artiste, Parthasarathi Desikar, will give a vocal recital. Vocalist Malti Gilani, also a disciple of the late Bade Ghulam Ali Khan will speak on the Patiala Gharana.

One of the senior disciples of Ustad Amir Khan Saheb, Surinder Singh began learning music at a very young age. Learning the intricacies of the Patiala and Kirana Gharana much before he reached his teens from his brother G.S.Sardar, Surinder Singh has had his share of glory and success. Having traveled across the country and having performed in different the singer will be performing at India International Centre this Monday at 6-30 p.m.

Priyadashini Govind gave her first maiden performance in 1974. And since then, there has been no turning back for her. A native of Tanjore, this talented dancer learnt Bharatanatyam under Guru Swamimalai K.Rajarathna, and abhinaya from Kalanidhi Narayanan and will perform at India International Centre this coming Thursday at 6-30 p.m.

Renowned dancer Shovana Narayan will give a Kathak performance "Kaisi Hori'' this coming Saturday at Ashok Theatre, Ashok Hotel at Chanakyapuri at 7-30 p.m.

The Yatrik Theatre will premier the play "Come As You Were'', a compelling new drama from Nicholas Kharkongor this Monday. The Natsamrat group will stage the comedy "Radha, Rozi Rukhsana'' this coming Saturday at 7 p.m. and will hold a repeat show on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Bharat Rang Mahotsav being organised by NSD will see a host of plays being staged across eight different venues all this week. While Monday will see Bangla play "Nagar Keertan'' being staged at Kamani at 6-30 p.m., Kannada play "Sarasammana Samadhi" at Abhimanch at 7 p.m., "Doosra Aadmi Doosri Aurat" at Sanmukh at 7 p.m., "Tat Niranjana" at 7-30 p.m. at Meghdoot, Priya play `Goitha Baba" at Bahmukh at 7-30 p.m. and "Thieves Carnival" at Sri Ram Centre at 6-30 p.m.

On Tuesday, the plays to be staged would be "Bhelua Sundari'' by Centre for Asian Theatre, Dhaka, "Bade Na Khelen Chhote Khel'', Bangla play "Dhorai Charit Manas'', "Heera Dom'', "Bombai ke Footpath par Ek Hazar Raatein'' and "Thieves Carnival''. On Wednesday, it will be Urdu play "Shahenshah Oedipus'' , "Choon Hyang Choon Hyange'' by the Korean group Taekyeung College, "Iss Kambhakt Sathe ka kya Karen'', "Chandrahas'' and "Nirguniya''.

Thursday will see the staging of "Chainpur ki Dastan'', "Dastan Kehte Kehte'', "Aakani Aatmakatha'', "Thoongigal'', "Bhaunri Katha'', "Khelar Niyam'' and "Nirguniya''. As for the weekend, it will be time for "Sher Afghan'', "Dhramputra'', "Avatar'', "Kamala Kunwarit Sadhu'', "A Deep Fried Jam'' and "Mein Taan Ikk Saarangi Haan'' on Saturday and "Mukti'', "Yayati'', "Border'', "Mahakavi Kalidasa'', "Yeto na chaha tha'' and "Abhijnan Shakuntalam'' on Sunday.

Rabindranath Tagore's inspired Nobel Prize winning poetic masterpiece "Gitanjali'' will come alive onstage in Gopal Sharman's theatrical production this weekend. Gopal Sharman performs Gitanjali on the equisitite teak and rose wood panel Akshara stage. Also featured will be the Kabuliwala, one endearing short stories by the master writer.

The play will be staged this coming Saturday and Sunday at Akshara Theatre on Baba Kharak Singh Marg at 7-30 p.m.

Indu Art Theatre and Film Society will be presenting two hilarious comedies "Allah Meharban to Gadha Pahalwan'' at 3-30 p.m. and "Shikarpur ka Hassan''at 6-30 p.m. at LTG auditorium.

As part of the ongoing festival of Dilip Kumar films, the Habitat Film Club will screen the multi-starrer and mega hit Subhash Ghai's film "Saudagar'. Wednesday will see the screening of the documentary "Tell them the tree they had planted has now grown'', a cinematic diary of a Kashmiri revisiting his home to witness the scars if a paradise being lost.

Made by Ajay Raina, the film won the Golden Conch at the Mumbai International Film festival this year. Also screened will be `Kshurasya Dhara'', a film on the Oracles of Kerala by Vipin Vijay, winner of the special jury award. The film-makers will be present to discuss their films. The screening begins at 7 p.m.

Coming to an end this coming Wednesday is an exhibition of paintings "Beauty in Nature'' by Kusum Rele at the Habiart Gallery of India Habitat Centre between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Starting this coming Friday is an exhibition of Afghan artist Shauila Khalili on human destruction and the beauty of nature. Closing on Thursday are the selected retrospective "Along the pathway of a Loner'' of Anil Karanjai at India International Centre Annexe Gallery.
