Furniture from across the globe

IF IT is imported furniture you are looking for, you should head for Metro Style. With classy pieces from Malaysia, Italy, Dubai, Thailand, Indonesia, and China, Metro Style promises to give you a "world class home'' indeed.

Opened in January this year, Metro Style is the brainchild of Veerashetty and Venkatesan of Associated Impex. Having got experience in making modular workstations and architectural glass works, they started the store as an "extension targeted at the home''.

To make their store stand out, the two decided to tap the imported furniture market. Mr. Venkatesan says: "Looking at the quality, design, and finishing, one can not hope to make this kind of furniture in India, for the price we are selling at.'' True to his word, each piece here is indeed worth taking a look at. Mr. Venkatesan says: "Where design and finishing are concerned, certain moulding, coating, and final touches are not possible here in India.''

But how does Metro Style compare with the other international brands that are now available in India? "We select specialised manufacturers abroad. They are experienced and certified for their quality. We go though their track record, visit their factories and only when we are satisfied, do we procure units from them,'' explain the men who have just returned from Malaysia after attending the World Furniture Exhibition held there. Furniture at Metro Style are made of rubber wood, teak wood, mahogany, and in combinations of steel and wood. It is fascinating to note that rubber wood takes various colours of staining, , which are available at the showroom.

Metro Style sofa sets are worth a second look. Made with packet springs and high-density polyurethane foam, they are covered with foam leather that has been stapled in such a way that there is not a single nail in any piece. Mr. Venkatesan says: "We have 25 varieties of sofas, which no showroom in India can boast of. Our sofas are selling really fast. Everyone seems to want the black foam leather pieces, though we offer so many colours.''

With competitive rates, its bedroom sets (a king or queen size bed, two side tables, a dressing table and stool, four to six door wardrobes) are priced Rs. 80,000 upwards. Metro Style also has dining sets which are priced between Rs. 11,000 and Rs. 14,000. Sofa sets start at Rs. 25,000, and little utility items such as show racks, desks, book shelves, and storage units are priced Rs. 2,000 upwards. ``Our knocked-down furniture is easy to assemble. It requires no carpentry and cuts on labour costs. So our furniture is not highly priced and gives you value for money,'' says Mr. Venkatesan.

Metro Style imports new pieces every month and plans to introduce furniture such as adjustable sofas (a two-seater sofa which could turn into a storage unit), massagers, and recliners. The showroom can be contacted on 5276156/ 5278851.
