Meet the jury

The following comprise the jury of the Seventh International Film Festival of Kerala:

Marta Meszaros

chairperson

Hungarian director with a few modern classics to her credit. In a career spanning more than four decades, she has given a feminine sensibility and sensitivity to Hungarian cinema Her interests are reflected in the titles of her films: `The Girl', `Adoption', `Nine Months', `Just Like at Home' , `Diary for my Children', `Diary for My Father and Mother' and `Foetus' . Marta was born in Budapest, Hungary. In 1936, she and her father, sculptor Laszlo Meszaros, migrated to the Soviet Union. She graduated from the Moscow Academy of Cinematographic Art and worked at the Budapest Newsreel Studio and the Bucharest Documentary Studio.She returned to Budapest in 1958, making documentaries on popular science, art and other subjects, and feature films. Her recent films have been `The Seventh Room', `LittleVilma: The Last Diary' and `Miraculous Mandarin'.

Reinhard Hauff

German director, whose works are noted for their social and political values. Reinhard Hauff was born in 1939 in Marburg. He studied German and Theatre Studies in Vienna. During term breaks, he worked in the entertainment department of the Bavaria Studios. Hauff made his first TV film in1969 (`Die Revolte') and many of his subsequent TV films were so successful that they were shown in cinemas.

Kohei Oguri

Japanese director whose works embrace contemporary issues as well as traditional Japan. Born at Maebashi in Gunma prefecture of Japan, Kohei Oguri graduated in drama from the Literature Department of Waseda University. He then assisted such directors as Masahiro Shinoda and Kiriro Urayama. In 1981, Oguri directed his first film, `Muddy River', which was based on a novel by Teru Miyamoto. His later films include `For Kayako', `Sting of Death' (which won the Grand Prix and the International Critics Prize at Cannes) and `Sleeping Man'.

Tissa Abeysekara

Sri Lankan director, writer and journalist. Tissa Abeysekara was born in 1939 in Maharagama, a littlerailroad town 12 miles south east of Colombo. He was an assistant director and dialogue writer on Lester James Peries' `Gamperaliya', which won the Golden Peacock for the Best Film at the Third International Film Festival held in New Delhi. His films include `Karumakkarayo' (The Ill-fated), `Mahadedera' and `Viragaya' (The Way of the Lotus).

Santwana Bardoloi

This Assamese stage and screen actress has performed in plays such as `The Father' (Strindberg) and `A Doll's House' (Ibsen). Her maiden feature film, `Adajya' (The Flight), has won several international awards.

The FIPRESCI jury comprises Derek Malcolm (chairperson), Andrea Martini and Prabodh Kumar Maitra.
