A story inspired by life?

WITH SOME private satellite channels off the air, it is perhaps a well-timed move on the part of Hallmark channel to step up its efforts in areas of distribution, marketing and promotion. The channel arranged a 10-minute interview with the leading lady of its new serial `McLeod's Daughters' telecast every Saturday, from March 23. From its Hong Kong base I was linked to Australia for a chat with the younger daughter, Tess of the Drover's Run (farm), in the new serial.
Tuesday, March 19, 1.30 p.m. The telephone rings. The call is from the intercontinental tete-a-tete, Australia. This Indo-Australian ``chaat'' masala had the young and vivacious movie-cum-television artiste, Bridie Carter, from Melbourne at the other end. Here are the details ...
Was the story inspired by real life characters or incidents?
Not exactly. But, there have been similar situations in Australia where women have risen to the occasion and run the show successfully.
I am interested in McLeods' Daughters because I am one of four daughters.
Oh! That's lovely.
Do you have sisters and brothers?
No sisters, only two brothers.
The serial has been produced in the U.N. International Year of Women Empowerment. Any comments?
Oh! what you are saying is fantastic.
Did you emerge a better daughter to your parents after playing McLeod's optimistic, achieving daughter?
I am still playing the role.
Perhaps this question is to be addressed to your parents.
I think so.
On reading your bio-data I learnt you have played dark roles like the ones in ``My killer, My Husband'' and "Murder Call". How did you land your latest role?
I was auditioned four times before I landed this great role. What is to happen takes place at the right time.
What do you know of India? Have you been here?
No, But my Mom visited Pune in 1980 and returned with colourful veils, head dresses and a host of other gifts. Of course, I would love to visit too.
Where was the film shot?
In the stykes of Australia.
What role would you particularly love to play?
That of Ophelia in Hamlet but if Hamlet were a girl surely Hamlet then.
You attended drama classes when you were young. Did this help you in emoting the lighter scenes?
Oh! that was very long ago when I was about five years old. I love drama and comedy and it is the latter that always warms a character.
It has been telecast in Australia. How have the viewers there received it?
To this, Ms. Lakshmi Hariharan intercedes from Hong Kong to say: ``It is among the top 10 serials and has been allotted a good time slot 7.30 p.m. on Australian television.
One last question. Does Tess have to display more of physical or mental strength?
Physical, mental and emotional strength! Here's hoping we all get stronger for viewing it.
Thank you and wishing you awards galore!
