A forum for women

The Duchess Club, which aims at helping women have a better outlook on life, recently organised a book reading session featuring Sivasankari.

THE FIRST one drew upon the ravages of marriage and the sometimes-inevitable pitfalls of relationships — it was quite a surprise that such insights and observation took place at a time when marriages were perhaps not so fragile. The second one dealt with the all-time longings of a child for the mother's attention and love — it was moving without being maudlin. And there could have been more such observations about life through the short stories that were read out in such a simple but effective manner but for the fact that it was getting late and time was running out.

All this happened at a book reading by Sivasankari from her `transcreated ' work "The Betrayal and Other Stories" organised by the Duchess Club at Samavesh Hall, Hotel Savera on March 21.While book readings by themselves are mundane, this particular occasion marked the firm entrenching of a club that seeks to help women accomplish their goals and also enrich their lives by providing a forum to share information for a better outlook on life.

Launched on January 28, the Duchess Club comprises women from all walks of life with a common goal of learning and sharing. Five women — Nina Reddy, Rathi Nilakantan, Anuradha Sachdev, Anu Agarwal, Sujatha Mundhra — thought it fit to gather like-minded women so that through the various programmes each month their collective wisdom can initiate many thought processes to bring out the best in each one of them. They have on their board honorary members such as Sivasankari, C.K. Gariyali, Chairperson, Social Welfare Department, and Anita Gupta, Vice President, Marketing, HTA. And that day also saw the participation of N. Ram, Editor, Frontline, who introduced the book and spoke extensively about R.K Narayan and his works. He stressed the importance of economy of words and the advantages of omitting the redundant. Maalan, Editor, Sun News Channel, provided a brief picture of the trends in Tamil literature.

The floor was thrown open for a discussion at the end of the reading where some interesting insights were provided on the status of marriage. The reading motivated those who attended to buy the book (with its cover designed by Thota Tharani) that was being sold at a special price outside. Many of the stories are simple, speaking of day-to-day routines and thoughts. The main one, "The Betrayal" has a twist to it. Those interested in being part of the Duchess Club could call 8114700 or 8265350.
