Why 'Lagaan' does not need an Oscar
|
`Lagaan' does not need an award or a certificate. Public acceptance is the biggest benchmark of an individual's talent or achievement.

IT WAS the big day, and for Bollywood, a tryst with Hollywood. The moment came and passed by in a flash. A John Travolta swagger, a Sharon Stone pout and the nominations for the Best Foreign language film were announced. Blissfully unaware of the hopes of a billion plus, the two quietly announced the winner. And it was not Lagaan.
Oscar or no Oscar, Lagaan is a winner. More than a billion have already made an emphatic statement at the box office. Does one need more in terms of accolades and awards? An award at the international level need not be the ultimate yardstick to judge a work of art.
Mahatma Gandhi's unorthodox ways and methods, his steadfast commitment to truth and ahimsa brought us independence, but he did not get any Nobel. Sachin Tendulkar does not figure in the Wisden. Aamir Khan is yet to win a national award for best actor.
Does Gandhiji need a Nobel? Does Sachin need a Wisden certification? No, a Nobel needs a Gandhiji, Wisden needs Sachin, national awards need Aamir. So, Lagaan does not need an Oscar. An Oscar needs a Laagan.
