Winners to look forward to

Some of the films that scored at the Academy Awards are opening shortly at a theatre near you.

John Nash (Russel Crowe) and Alicia (Jennifer Connely) in `A Beautiful Mind.'

UNLIKE IN the good old days when we would get to see films that had won Oscars much later (sometimes even after a year!), now we have seen some of the films that were up for the Academy Award and others are up for release.

Black Hawk Down, Ridley Scott's gritty war realistic drama; which won Oscars for editing and sound is up for release tomorrow.

The film based on a book of the same name by Mark Bowden of The Philadelphia Inquirer tells the story of a covert operation that went horribly wrong in Mogadishu, Somalia on Oct 3, 1993.

The film's ensemble cast includes Josh Hartnett as a nervous Sergeant leading his first mission and Ewan Mcgregor. The violence is brutal and unrelenting through the film's 2-½ hour running time.

A Beautiful Mind with four Oscars (Picture, Director, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay) follows Black Hawk Down. "We are looking at a mid-April release," Akshad Misra of Sangeet said. "Winning the Oscars makes a difference to the collections as the film won the two big ones - Director and Film."

Another film to look forward to is the animated feature Monsters, Inc. (Best Original song).

With a voice cast of Billy Crystal and John Goodman playing Mike and Sully who work at Monster's Inc., a giant corporation that converts children's screams into energy, the film promises to be a treat to children and grown ups alike.

Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring did not sweep the Oscars as was expected but as Vijay Kumar of Anand theatre said, "The film has been doing very well anyway."

The winning of the Oscars is yet to make a difference in the collections as "the awards were only announced today. We will know in a couple of days."

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone; which was nominated for a couple of Oscars including costumes but did not win any, will be released on April 12.

Denzel Washington's Oscar winning turn in Antoine Fuqua's Training Day as a crooked LAPD cop Alonzo Harris will follow Harry Potter.

Oscar winners that have already been screened include Moulin Rouge (art direction, costume), Shrek (animated feature) and Pearl Harbor (sound editing).

However, unlike last year's Gladiator, which had repeat screenings after the Oscars were announced, these films are not going to be screened again.

Mike and Sully go to collect screams in `Monsters, Inc.'

"Moulin Rouge and Shrek did not do well the first time around," Gladiator was a different kind of film," Misra said explaining the repeat runs the film enjoyed.

We might not have a chance of seeing No Man's Land - the Bosnian film that ran Lagaan out in the best foreign film category, as "it is not from the regular distributors," Misra commented.

The Oscars have come and gone but these releases would give us a chance to play members of the academy and indulge that highly popular game of "did it or did it not" deserve an Oscar.
