Go for the glitter

S.N.S.N.

All for that shimmer.

APART FROM the traditional shades of red, colours like black, pink, green, silver and gold are the hot favourites. While glitter mehendi and zardosari (mehendi with golden threads) stay just for a couple of days, red stays the longest. Black colour has to be tested on the wrist first to check for possible reaction.

While the mehendi powder is sourced from different places - from Old City to Rajasthan - `Karachi', `Pakeeza' and `Anarkali' are the popular brands. Some unbranded powders too are considered good. Generally, the cones are made at the parlours.

Though it is difficult to know about the ingredients used, their proportion and the ratio of the mehendi - as each parlour has its own formula - the main components include mehendi powder, tea decoction, kasu, mehendi oil, eucalyptus oil, lemon and tamarind. Either mehendi oil or some mild body oil is applied on the palms before applying the mehendi for more effect and to avoid irritation. After patterning the designs, limejuice and sugar mix is dabbed on the palm at regular intervals. This helps not only in keeping the moisture intact but also in deepening the colour. But, moistening tools are not used in glitter mehendi. The time taken for designing the mehendi on both the hands (back and front, and sometimes to the elbow) varies from one hour to four hours depending on the design, practice and expertise.

The price ranges from Rs. 50 (for a child on one hand) to Rs. 2,500 (bridal) and goes up to Rs. 10,000 (approx.) for group bookings where the girls from a beauty parlour are expected go to the bride's house to take part in the mehendi rasm and apply mehendi to all the women in the household.

For Arabic designs, the price is from Rs. 200-250 to Rs. 1,500. While golden mehendi is priced at Rs. 400 and Zardosari at Rs. 600 and above, golden border with silver filling is Rs. 600. The trend now is to design mehendi on the whole hands if the bride is wearing a ghagra choli with mega sleeves. Now that you know how to match the red colour on your palm with that flush on your cheek or with the colour of your dress, just get set to shimmer.
