Singing and dancing to stardom

SWATHI KRISHNASWAMI

He sings and dances, and his album speaks of love. And he wants to put Kannada music on the national map.

Naveen Krishna

AN IMPRESSIVE voice, sound knowledge of music, and a sense of rhythm can make one a good singer. But to become a known singer, one needs a platform to express oneself. And a bit of luck. See? It's not easy. For some, it's a piece of cake while for others, success comes after much hard work and perseverance. Budding singer-actor Naveen Krishna belongs to the latter.

This young graduate in business management discovered he was more at home in front of the footlights than at board meetings.

He was the lead singer with Melody Makers while in college and it wasn't long before he realised where his true vocation lay.

This decision was precipitated two years ago when he met up with Shiva Shankar Arun, his junior in college.

It helped that Arun was trained in Indian classical and Western music, and a composer to boot. After a couple of informal jamming sessions, the two discovered they created "some wonderful music together." The result was their album, Nee, whose central theme is love and its chronological progression.

Its launch at JSS Auditorium was attended by the likes of actors Vishnuvardhan, Puneeth Rajkumar, and Madhu Bangarappa, and the event attracted local media attention.

Naveen, who is also good in Bharatanatya and breakdance, performed to three of his songs from the album.

This young singer, who wrote all the songs, has a soulful voice which renders depth and expression to each song, be it a romantic number like Sangaati, or a peppy one like Munjaneya. Naveen, through his album, aims to give "Kannada music national recognition" and wants to do so by promoting it on Channel V and MTV.

A live show at Planet M is also on the cards.

Naveen has acted in the Kannada film, Srirasthu-Shubhamasthu and in the yet-to-be-released Telugu movie Dreamz. He has acted in serials such as Sahana, Beladingalagiba and Prathbhimba.

This multi-faceted performer is bound to go places in Kannada music and film industry.
