C.V.Raman's gift to Kochi

INDIA'S legendary scientist and Nobel laurate Sir C.V.Raman, if alive, would have argued for the revival of Kochi's 47-year-old chemical company. But then, what has Sir C.V.Raman to do with Kochi's sinking chemical company? Interestingly, the question may raise many eyebrows but the story is quite interesting.

Very few know that TCM Company was the brainchild of Sir C.V.Raman and that its founder, Dr.P.Krishnamoorthy, was a close aide of India's great scientist. It was Sir C.V. who initiated the inception of TCM in Kerala.

Having lost himself to the development of science, Sir.C.V. encouraged the large-scale production of Copper Sulphate and other chemicals. He goaded his close associate, Dr.P.Krishnamoorthy to start the production of Copper Sulphate in Kerala.

Electricity was the main raw material required for the production of TCMs chemicals, and Kochi, with abundant power resources, was chosen as the ideal place for the production of TCM chemicals. Power was then a cheap commodity.

A scientist who won the trust of Sir.C.V.Raman, Dr.P.Krishnamoorthy assisted Sir. C.V. in his paper works. It was under the compulsion of Sir C.V.Raman that Dr.P.Krishnamoorthy ventured into this business in Kerala.

Thus Sir.C.V.Raman became the fonder-chairman of Kochi's renowned chemical company in 1956.

While this Raman effect has been a boon to many employees and their families, the latest developments have affected them badly.
