Trivial fare

TRIANGULAR DRAMA: Akash as Balu in the film.

Manasutho (TELUGU)

Cast: Akash, Arzoo Govitrikar, Vijayabhaskar, AVS, Sudha

Dir: A.S. Ravikumar Chowdary

Music: Asirvad

WRITER-DIRECTOR Ravikumar Chowdary's narration is rather absurd. Bhanu (Vijayabhaskar) is introduced as a brilliant student but is always sad, as he fails to get a response from Swapna (Arzoo Govitrikar). However, the girl is not even aware of Bhanu's love for her. She just admires him for his academic brilliance, but gets attracted to Balu (Akash). It is also one-sided, because Balu, who enjoys his bachelorhood, treats her as a friend. This is the basic structure of this so-called triangular love story. Rest of the drama is filled with trivialities for entertainment sake.

The first half is loaded with college pranks by Balu and his half-a-dozen friends. The director keeps the most important character of Bhanu away from all this, but for a touch-and-go introductory shot showing him trying to get into a running train. He enters the same bogie as that of Balu, his parents (AVS and Sudha) and Swapna, proceeding to Tirupati.

Bhanu's parents (Narra Venkateswara Rao and Devisree) are worried about their son's attitude. But, slowly they understand the depth of his love for Swapna. How to convey this to the girl, who has no idea of this, is the issue. The parents of Balu and Swapna decide to get them married. Balu realises that his friend Bhanu loves Swapna and promises Bhanu's parents that he will ensure Swapna accepts their son. How he brings a change in the hearts sustains interest to some extent.

Bhanu's role proves a drag on the subject. He cuts a sorry figure throughout the film. In fact, Bhanu and Swapna are potential sources for the drama but are wasted. The camera sticks to Akash who plays a collegian. Arzoo Govitrikar is a poor choice for Swapna's role. She lacks looks and histrionic sense as well. The veteran character artistes playing parents of the three main characters acquit themselves well. The dialogue gets literally drowned in the rerecording and mixing. The songs prove ineffective even from the point of view of drama.
