Fighting terror

Anti-terrorism Day is on May 21. The word `Terrorism' figures on the first page of every newspaper almost every day. September 11 may well be another word for `terrorism', given the larger-than life-role the west plays in life just about anywhere on Planet Earth.

In almost every part of the world, people have to live and cope with terrorism in different ways.

The fact that there is an Anti-terrorism Day itself is shameful to humanity. Somewhere along the line, someone added a trace of glamour to terrorism, and in the process, providing a `hero' effect to those indulging in unlawful acts and murder, whatever the reason. That's when sanity, tolerance took leave and terrorism of every shade gripped the world, including terror tactics in everyday life. Perhaps injustice, the ever-increasing needs of humans the world over and lust for power contributed to growing terrorism. Though this seems too simple a way to define the origin of terrorism, the root can be traced there, in Sri Lanka, Bosnia (isn't war a euphemism for terrorism?), Palestine, Ireland and closer home, in Kannur. If terrorism is only the means to an end as organised terrorists proclaim, can we have just one example where terrorism has yielded peace in the end? And if it is just to put the fear into people to bulldoze them into giving in, then how long will this artificial peace last? They call it temporary ceasefire, don't they?
