Santosham... Supreme... Rs. 38
GO TO any corner of the city - from pan shops and hair-cutting salons to music stores - and you are only likely to be welcomed by Devude digi vachina, Nuvvante naakishtamani, Dhimdhinaktari naktithom or Mehebooba mehebooba. And, it is unlikely that youngsters in the city are unfamiliar with these songs from Santosham, the music of which is now making waves. With this venture, music director R.P. Patnaik scores over his contemporaries by tapping the pulse of the youth.
Sticking to his principle of encouraging local talent, Patnaik always wanted Telugu singers to sing for his movies with the only exception of Shankar Mahadevan. Usha, who made an entry with her Tuniga tuniga song and Rajesh, another budding local singer, find a prominent place in the album which has eight equally attractive numbers.
Nee Manasu Naaku Nachindi... Sahitya Music... Rs. 28
SOMETIMES, NEWCOMERS promise hope and show more talent than the established names in the field. This holds true in the case of Vijay Paila, the new composer in Telugu cinema. His work in Nee Manasu Naaku Nachindi, yet another all-newcomers launch pad, speaks of his enthusiasm. Vijay has also penned a couple of songs in the film. His composition Maa taste veru sounds similar to Urvasi urvasi take it easy urvasi (Premikudu), in its content. The title song, Na manasu neeve hai and Pagadala pallaki meeda are the other picks which have a combination of three, four tunes in the same song and sound quite different, experimental and refreshing.

Devdas... Universal... Rs. 55
SANJAY LEELA BHANSALI'S magnum opus is finally rolling out. There was much expectation from Ismail Durbar considering his Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam. Unfortunately, the music of Devdas does not match up. Whatever may have been Ismail's problems with Bhansali (he is reported to have walked out of the film midway ) Ismail fails to recreate the earlier magic. The welcome addition is the voice of newcomer Shreya Ghoshal. She seems to have the talent for a long stint in Bollywood. Her versatility is proved in the first song Silsila ye chahat ka where she imparts a freshness to the song through her voice. Otherwise the opening portions seem a straight lift from Ghanana, ghanana... (Lagaan).
For that matter most of the numbers ring a bell in terms of tunes. None of them has the liveliness of a Nimboodaa... and Dol baaje or are subtly tuned like Aankhon ki gustakhiyan.
The mainstay of the album is the piece Kaahe Chhed mohe which is like a song and poetry rolled into one. To the tune of Birju Maharaj and Kavita Subramaniam, Madhuri renders her lines pretty effectively - seems like a choreography. Woh chand sounds quite like Woh shaam ek ajeeb thi... the yesteryear number. The other songs are nothing much to write about.
In line with the trend these days of a `symphonic' instrumental composition, this album too has a theme. Basically instrumental orchestration, this one is composed by Monty with just voices in the background.
Ismail Durbar has made attempts to blend classical music into his tunes. But because of his dependence on and usage of familiar tunes, the music lacks the freshness. The singers (Kavita Subramaniam, Udit Narayan, Jaspinder Narula and others) have put in their best.
Only time will tell whether this album will make it to the chartbuster list.
Hullad Ka Hullad... Hullad Muradabadi... Venus... Rs. 35
JOKE SUNO bhai joke suno... Patni se rakhi bandwalo; Dohe tho Das ke family likhte hai (jaise Surdas, Kabirdas aur Tulsidas)... These are not statements, but simply comical verse by Hullad Muradabadi, a popular poet and a major attraction at many mushaira gatherings. If you think these are rib-tickling enough to inspire you, try listening to the album, Hullad ka Hullad. If you a mushiara person, (even if you are not, for that matter) the verses are sure to leave you in splits. Nice attempt but strictly for those who enjoy verse and prefer it to foot-tapping chartbusters.
