The tyranny of looking good
We laughed at Victorian women who tortured themselves with corsets and lived on vinegar (and dying young of TB in the process), all to remain thin and wan. Time we looked at ourselves too. Today, women use not whalebone, but modern materials like si licon, plastic, elastic, and dubious pills and potions to conform to body images dictated by the beauty and cosmetics industries. The slimming industry has never had it so good, reports MEERA GUTHI.
