Stress on stress-free system of study

KNOWLEDGE AND spiritual awareness should go hand in hand with the social and political system. Only then can justice prevail in society and there will be a sense of belonging with everyone in the world, irrespective of their religious and cultural background or age group. We need to impart education with this aim in view at the schools and college levels.

Many are realising the need for spiritual development and introducing this kind of education in schools. The Sri Sri Ravishankar Vidya Mandir in Cochin is a very different kind of school. Staffed by four teachers and three ayahs, and managed by a voluntary 5-member committee, the school is eco-conscious and the environment is very child friendly.

It is run on an NCERT recommended curriculum and system. A child studying in this school has a stress-free process of education wherein his awareness is nurtured and human values are instilled instead of merely providing education.

The school enables the child to be competent in all fields and master a chosen subject. Education is not just literacy. It is preparing children to live with a smile in this ever-changing world by equipping them with all the necessary skills and information to be worthy citizens of this globally linked planet.

Teachers who have also been trained by the staff of Sri Sri Ravishankar run the school. In them are instilled the special techniques and the unique experiences which are what makes the institution a world renowned one. Children are also taught, other than their basic curriculum, to meditate. The development of the body is stressed through carefully designed physical exercises, education about the right diet and yogic techniques of pranayama.

Teachers bring out the natural interest in a child and then focus on facilitating the learning of all aspects of education through these interests. For eg. If a child is fascinated with cars, then language, math, logical reasoning etc would all be taught with the theme of cars. This would be very relevant to the child and hence he will take to education like a duck to water. The Sri Sri Ravishankar Vidya Mandir also conducts summer camps on a regular basis where children learn various things from painting, sculpting to voice modulation and specialists conduct talks on music and spirituality, ayurveda etc.

The children are taken out for developing their five senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. At the moment, classes are on for playschool and the kGlevels. Learning is not fixed to book learning, says Commander Suresh.
