What price winnings?

The Mummy saga...

NO MORE eating your heart out over what's being won on the small screen. A recent winner of the STAR Plus show, "Khulja Sim Sim", Kumar Kashinath Kale (how lucky can you get? A triple `K'!) won goods supposedly worth Rs.96,750 only to have them valued and discover that the gifts were not even worth Rs. 25,000. Kale won a diamond ring, a Blaupunkt car stereo and a Nokia phone, for which he paid a 30.6 per cent gift tax amount of Rs. 29,606. Imagine his shock when he discovered the real worth of his winnings. Mr. Kale now stands shunted between the channel executives of STAR Plus, the show's producers and gift sponsors. He does not care about the value of the gifts, but the amount that he had to cough up as gift tax really sticks in his gullet.
