A `Q' for the cue

Vizag is getting into the metro groove, with the popularity of snooker dens

Like a sniper his gaze is fixed between the `V'. His body crouched in assault position, this youth is a study in concentration and looks ready for the strike. Well, this is not a sequence at the line of control (LOC) or in some street brawl. It is a routine scene at Planet Q, the most frequented snooker den of the city.

Making a modest beginning in 1999 with four tables, today Planet Q is set to excite you with nine tables, with four international match tables and all spread in an electrifying ambience. Playing the latest and hottest albums, the mood is set for a try with the cue the moment you embark on this planet.

In the evening, this place looks like a conglomeration of boardrooms, with people crowding over the tables, under glaring lights. The frequent ecstatic shouts in varying decibels emanating after every hit or mishit sends reverberating echoes, reminding one that this is the happening place.

"The crowd pours in throughout the week, but weekends are generally packed," says Srinivas Reddy, the promoter of this hangout. Reddy, a garment exporter by profession, who had to wind up his lucrative business in Bangalore at the instance of his parents so that he could stay near them, had the thought of setting up such a place in some bigger city. But being a Vizagite, the growing metro culture of the city enticed him to pitch it up here itself.

Planet Q was incepted when snooker culture was sprouting throughout the city. Every colony was host to a couple of snooker parlours. The whizzing balls on the velvet green top under the light was by itself a spectacle for the nouveau riche of Vizag---it was their new found love. But over the years only a few have survived to send the ball scurrying into a pocket by the mere push of the cue.

It was evident to Srinivas that to survive he had to give the best ambience without compromising on quality. "Today our place has got the best look with the best crowd," avers the young promoter.

Along with the development on the game front, the place has also got a fast food joint, serving timely burgers and rolls to keep you going for a few frames more. The most interesting part of this joint is its crowd. You can find people from 16 to 60 years moving around the place with cue in hand, jumping from one table to another, and the bon camaraderie is at its pinnacle.

Executives after a hectic schedule find it to be the best place to spend some time, and the game also helps to improve their concentration according to one of them. For the local youth Planet Q is the happening place, be it for a birthday bash or just a pastime. With all the music, food, good crowd and above all the cue to stroke a few balls, it is the perfect place to chill out whether on a weekday or on a weekend.

Book your table at the earliest or you could be in a queue at the "Q."
