Chop it right

From towering heads of hair to coloured, curled and streaked looks, women have been following the hairdressing, styles and trends quite closely. A peek at what's in this monsoon.

The crowning glory has transformed into a vital fashion accessory

FASHIONABLE WOMEN in the 17th and 18th centuries contrived towering heads of hair adorned with vegetables, fruit, feathers and even vases of flowers. Many women sat up all night dozing in chairs rather than spoil their headpieces by lying in bed.

Today, hairstyling in contrast to the bygone era is more simplified and practical. Hairstyling has come a long way. The crowning glory is seen as a versatile fashion accessory - to be coloured, curled, dressed up or smoothed down. The texture of our hair is determined by the size and shape of the hair follicle which is a genetic trait controlled by hormones and related to age and racial characteristics. The hairstyling products of today defy this statement.

Flyaway hair can be given volume, straight hair could transform into corkscrew curls and black hair could turn red. Following is a peek at `right chops' predicted under the fashion canopy for this season. Short hair can be cut close, cropped or layered in a variety of styles - the short, urchin cut is good for all hair textures. In opposition with overall hair colouring, sectioned highlighting is in. This lends interest and adds thickness to fine hair. The ancient Greeks regarded blonde as the hair colour of gods and heroes and believed that `redheads' be treated with contempt. With no threat from the Greek graves, the L'oreal and Schwarzkopf palette indicates deep red, bold copper and warm sorrel lights. A two-tone effect created by hair coloured copper with random blonde highlights is strong this season.

In contrast to a `neat look' of say a blunt cut, choppy layers are at a high. The uneven texture creates a lift. Hair could be lifted at roots to get height. A choppy cut could be rough dried and then sections could be straightened using flat irons.

The style gallery for short hair also indicates hair lightly layered and cut close into the nape. A root perm could provide extra volume at the crown of the head. In a layered cut, a wet look gel is a strong indication. On the gel, hair could be combed into soft waves leaving the sides to dry naturally. The next pointer talks of a razor cut. A break-up texture of a highlighted razored bob is walking up the charts. Thick hair when razor cut could obtain `that' stunning forward movement. Jaw length bob with heavy razor cut layers is also encompassed in the fashion canopy. Texturising the ends of the hair lends a new feel to the classic bob. The short cut team has a style member that forms tufts at the crown. The cut is flatter at the sides with longer lengths left around the ears.

The essence of layered scoops-ups is in letting a few strands fall loosely.

Medium length hair could be worn in a lightly layered fashion. The same could be tied up into a spiky ponytail. A shoulder length cut could be ruffle dried using a gel and a tousled effect could be obtained by using a diffuser attachment on the dryer. Reminding us of the gone seasons, medium length hair could be blow dried straight and ends tonged to achieve mini-flicks.

Long hair could be graduated at the sides to add volume and interest. Strip lights - a bolder version of highlights - can give this graduated cut wider streaks of colour. Copper lowlights add interest to the front as long hair is swept back and shorter layers left to fall freely around the face. Keeping in with the monsoon, long hair could be scooped up but the essence of the style is to allow lots of strands to fall in soft curls around the face. . Highlighted macro corkscrew curls with a wet look gel are doing strong. Also, sectioned and all-over crimps are on the charts. Layered hair could be scrunched up and the ends allowed to fan out.

Highlighted macro corkscrew curls are strong under the fashion canopy.

Hair accessories like glitter clips and rhinestone-studded clips could be employed to create an element of interest. "You create an impact when it is all right from top to toe." It is time you chopped your top right.
