Environment Day initiative

A Chennai - based enteprenuer has launched a pioneering initiative-collecting used plastic bottles for recycling.

`Plastic Recycling Solutions' (PRS) has set up a helpline 98410 95702 to aid Chennai residents in disposing used PET bottles in a profitable manner. Since its inception on June 5, this year, the company has set up a collection drive in Zone 10 of the Chennai Corporation. As part of the drive, the company has set up over 40 collection centres in this area (encompassing Adyar, Besant Nager, Thiruvanmiyur and Velachery).

To add an impetus to this initiative, `Plastic Recycling Solutions', promoted by M. Krishna Sai, a Chennai-based entrepreneur has set up a helpline to assist people in locating the collection centres in South Chennai.

This pioneering initiative, launched as part of the commemoration on World Environment Day in the city, was with a view to translate its ideal "Re-use, Reduce, Recycle". The company is currently offering Rs. 4 per kilo of PET bottles. Based on the response here, the company has plans of expanding their operations to other areas of the Chennai Corporation.

In recent months, Chennai has awoken to the threat of plastic pollution and its dangerous after effects. This initiative would provide a vital link between thousands of disposed PET bottles and the city's only PET recycling facility — Indian Organic Chemicals Limited (IOCL).

In 2001, 734 tonnes of PET bottles were sold, however, IOCL was able to source only 300 tonnes of the used bottles.

About 40 manned collection centres have been set up. Public or plastic dealers can deposit their bottles at these centres and collect a fee for the same.

Pioneering a social initiative, PRS has appointed over 200 Nari Kurava families living in Indiranagar and Kotturpuram to collect the disposed bottles. In less than a week, the group has been able to make an astounding collection of Rs. 15,000. What makes this initiative more significant is that it is fully supported by beverage industry leaders such as Coke and Bisleri.
