Asteriod action
THE BOMBARDMENT that resurfaced the Earth 3.9 billion years ago was produced by asteriods (small celestial bodies or minor planets revolving around the sun), not according to researchers of the University of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and University of Hawaii. The conclusion is that the bombardment was so severe that it destroyed older rocks of Earth. This is the reason that the oldest rocks are less than 3.9 billion years old.
Worms for waste
WORMS ARE now being increasingly used to clear garbage bins. Researchers from the University of Michigan have established a pilot vermicomposting project at Ann Arbour. Composting is the transformation of organic material through decompositioninto a soil-like material called compost. Waste dumped in landfills breaks down slowly due to lack of oxygen. As it decomposes, it produces methane gas and acidic leachate, which are detrimental to the environment. As an alternative, a worm bin has been developed to convert significant parts of the waste to compost. The worms munch on the kitchen waste, aerate it, break it up and transform them into nutrient-rich castings. This vermicompost is an excellent fertilizer .
