Everlasting appeal

AT THE Jugal Kishore Jewellers exhibition-cum-sale of rare antique and reproduction jewellery, traditional charm blends with contemporary tastes. Also available at the exhibition are new age jewellery set with semi-precious stones.

What's more, members of the Jugal Kishore family help customers in making a choice, while the history of each piece is explained. So while one admires a rare reproduction of a Victorian piece, the black silver filigree work holding together rubies and emeralds, one learns how the diamonds are set on the flat surface of the piece or why the Ashthalakshmi Navagraha maalai is so special.

One can also feasts one's eyes on a chunky Iranian jade inset with a Mughal style tracery of tiny rubies and emeralds, a 1,000-year old perfectly shaped padakam, a bewitching annam padakam and an old Rani haar fit for a queen.

The reproductions, of both South and North Indian jewellery traditions, are handcrafted by Chettinad artisans, all over 65 years of age! "We are trying to train younger people too," says Ashok Jugal Kishore, "but very few are willing to learn. Incidentally, we use real Burma rubies removed from damaged jewellery items, which we get."

On display are a stunning range of maanga malai, mugappu, nath, bullaku, thumb rings, hansli, necklaces, odiyanams, earrings and rings in diamonds, rubies and emeralds, set in gold. Gold bangles with emeralds and Burma rubies, diamond necklaces patterned in the old North Indian style and exquisite Victorian pieces strung in black pearls are other attractions.

Showcased at the exhibition for the first time in Chennai are strings and tumbles made of African and Brazilian semi-precious stones such as turquoise, rose quartz, crystal, amethyst, garnet, peridot and blue topaz, with matching pendants and bracelets. As for the prices, they are reasonable.

For the silver aficionados, there is a variety of Hallmark silver jewellery to choose from. Crafted in the Coorg style, the silver necklaces, bracelets and earrings compel attention.

The jewellery exhibition-and-sale is on at Jugal Kishore, Shop No.4, Ground Floor, Alsa Mall, Montieth Road, Egmore, and 44 (old No.73) C.P.Ramaswamy Road, Kalpataru Complex, Alwarpet, on July 25, 26 and 27.
