Insights into the sun
DID YOU know that the Sun is a She! At least, according to some tribes of Arunachala Pradesh. They believe the Sun is feminine as it is the source of all creation.
Dr. R. Nagaswamy will discuss "Surya Worship in Indian Art, Thought and Literature", at a talk organised by Prakriti Foundation on August 1, 7 p.m., at Sundara Mahal, Padmavathy Road, Jeypore Colony, Gopalapuram (ph. 8203582). He is the former Director of Department of Archaeology, Tamil Nadu, and is currently national consultant of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts for the United Nations Development Project of the Thanjavur Brihadeeswara temple.
The Sun is also known as the master chef! It embodies the spirit of the Vedas and represents the Trinity. Sun worship is common to all ancient civilisations. According to astrology, the Sun is Atmakaraka or soul indicator.
Sun worship in India has resulted in some exquisite temples such as Konark in Orissa, Modhera in Gujarat, the Surya Pahar temple in Goalpara in Assam, the Daakshinarka temple in Gaya, Suryanaar Koil in Tamil Nadu and Suryanarayana temple at Arasavalli in Andhra Pradesh.
