Listening and silence

THE WORDS `listen' and `silent' are both made up of the same letters, but they're very different. If we're simply silent, we'll end up listening like a stunned stonefish. We need to listen with our hearts, our eyes and our minds, as well as our ears. Listening, as opposed to being silent, does three precious things for us. It helps us build better relationships, which makes us happier. It helps us find out what's really going on and what people are really thinking, which makes us more effective, persuasive and influential. And if you're still not convinced, listen to this: listening carefully to others obliges them to listen carefully to us.

Sadly, listening is hard work and it doesn't come easily.

To really listen, put your thoughts on hold, even if you think you have something more important to say or disagree with what the speaker is saying. Try to see things from her point of view.

Get your body language right, too. As they say, if your eyes wander, your mind will too.
