Discovery with a difference

The Discovery Kids Screening 2002, a fun-filled learning programme, is being organised for the city's school children.

DISCOVERY CHANNEL is educating Chennai's school children in a different way. The channel is holding special screenings of Discovery Kids programmes in the city schools.

The initiative, called Discovery Kids Screening 2002 showcases programmes on subjects that are both unconventional as well as interesting — from culture to geography to movies. The channel aims at expanding the horizons of students' knowledge by giving them entertaining topics to ponder upon.

The programmes are being screened for children from Std. V to VIII, till the end of the month, in various schools such as Chettinad Vidyashram, AMM Matriculation School, Adarsh Vidyalaya and Abacus.

As the programmes are based on subjects that are fun to learn, they are educative as well as entertaining. Apart from the special screenings, Discovery Channel has another surprise for the children. After each screening, they will be asked a set of five questions. The channel will give away CDs to five students who have the right answers.

The following are the programmes that are being screened:

I Love Music, My Animal and My House — profiles children from across the globe — from Thailand to Belgium to Israel — who teach viewers about life in their parts of the world, introducing viewers to their distinct music, homes and animals.

Naturequest — Dr. David Suzuki, world-renowned scientist, broadcaster and environmentalist, brings a puzzle to his teen-aged daughter Severn that sends her on an adventure around the world. His knowledge and her youthful exuberance make Naturequest a truly engaging and exciting programme for children.

Volcanic Planet — takes children to Hawaii to find the answer to a simple question. What do volcanoes; dinosaurs and microbes have to do with a refrigerator?

Have Bike, Will Travel — invites children to take some water and an energy bar and set off on a trip with whales and mud shrimps around the Statue of Liberty and out into the galaxy on a spaceship.

Mega Movie Magic — showcases the biggest stunts and special effects from the movies that kids love to watch. Like a Hollywood backstage pass, it takes its young viewers behind the scenes to reveal the secrets of movie making.
