The impact of cinema

AT A six-day workshop conducted jointly by the Department of Journalism and Communication, University of Madras, and the Mass Communication Alumni Association, University of Madras (MCAUM), the focus was on the impact of cinema on society, with emphasis on the urban narrative in Indian cinema. Most of the participants were students of Communication from the university and other colleges.

Among the speakers included directors Balu Mahendra and Janaki Vishwanath, Vasuki of the All India Democratic Women's Association, media person Shashikumar Menon, film critics V.A.K. Ranga Rao and Vasanthi Sankaranarayanan, art critic Sadanand Menon, Suguna Swamy of O&M, Fr. Felix of the Department of Christian Studies, University of Madras, Fr. Rajanagayam of the Department of Visual Communication, Loyola College, Venkatesh Chakravarthy, film analyst and legal experts, Giridhar and Chandru.

The screening of "Veedu", "Kutty", "Vaastuhaara", "Gemini", Jean Luc Godard's "Breathless" and two shorts, "Happy Anniversary" and "Big City Blues", was followed by reviews of the films.

The importance of approaching cinema as a medium to project present day life, the portrayal of urban women in films, the psychological aspect of human relationship and Man's relationship with Nature, unrealistic portrayal of law and order in cinema and creation of a pan-Indian identity... these were some issues that were raised.

While it was not denied that most social evils had been attributed to the medium, some thought-provoking points were raised on how cinema can be used to develop society towards nation-building.
