Soorya shines

Soorya's silver jubilee festival, to begin on September 21, promises to be exciting.

Twenty-five glorious years, and Soorya still holds the cultural reins of the Kerala capital. The silver jubilee year sees the cultural society being adjudged the largest in Asia. According to the Limca Book of World Records, the 31-day Soorya India Festival, held annually, is the largest of its kind in Asia.

The India Festival 2002 will be flagged off on September 21 at the Tagore Theatre. The inaugural function will be followed by the world premiere of `Beebhatsa', a Hindi film directed by Jayaraj.

The festival is of three sections.

The first ten days (September 21 to 30) will be for the movie buff. The section includes the Festival of Indian Feature Films and Documentaries, Video Festival, Artists' Village for Painters and Sculptors, Group Discussion and Open Forum. Films such as `Danny', `Company', `Asoka', `Bollywood Calling', `The Legend of Bhagat Singh', `Kannathil Muthamittal', `Vastav' and `Devdas' will be screened in the Festival of Indian Feature Films and Documentaries section. The inaugural film of the Video Festival will be `Fr. Abel', directed by K. S. Prasad. There will be an exclusive section of golden oldies that include such gems as `Saheb, Biwi Aur Ghulam, `Mother India', `Mughal-E-Azam' and `Pakeezah'.

October 1 will mark the beginning of the Classical Music and Dance Festival. Day One will have K. J. Jesudas in concert. There will be concerts by Ramesh Narayan, Rajkumar Bharathi, Gaurav Majumdar, Nithyasree Mahadevan and M. Jayachandran, and dance recitals by Padma Subramaniam, Alarmel Valli, Malavika Sarukkai, Lakshmi Gopalaswami, Rajendra Gangani and Smitha Rajan. Workshops and lecture demonstrations will also be held.

The last 10 days of the festival will be marked by Theatre Festival, Talk Festival, Choreography festival, Handicrafts Festival, Story Hour, Poetry Hour, Folk theatre Festival, Book Fair and Ethnic Food Festival. Eminent personalities will participate.

The Festival will conclude with Guru Pooja on October 21, where a veteran artiste will be offered Dakshina by art enthusiasts and organisations. This will be followed by the screening of `Lagaan'.

The Soorya plans for the silver jubilee year do not end with the India Festival. November 14 will see the launch of `Parampara', a weeklong session of classical music and dance by the disciples of renowned gurus. The programme will be jointly organised by Soorya and the House of Russian Culture, Thiruvananthapuram. Hit films have been scheduled to hit the Soorya screen in December.

The list includes `Aks', `Mohabbatein', `Mission Kashmir' and `Meesa Madhavan'.
