On trial for being `different'
MANY OF the boy-meets-girl romances that have flooded cinemas in recent times have bombed. Remember `Kya Dil Ne Kaha'or `Aap Mujhe Acche Lagne Lage'? It's no surprise if you don't.
But now `Shakti - The Power', touted as Karisma Kapoor's histrionic triumph, and `Gunaah', a cop and criminal love story, have the chance to prove if they can do better than the humdrum romances.
One week after their release, it looks as if battered exhibitors, in a state of depression about falling audience figures, are willing to take heart from even moderate gains.
Despite the fact that both `Gunaah' and `Shakti' have managed to gross just about an average response, the Mumbai distributors of the film aren't complaining.
According to Rajesh Thadani, the average response to `Gunaah' could be attributed to two factors, its being compared to Bipasha-Dino's earlier film, `Raaz', and the fact that it clashed with the release of `Shakti'.
As for `Shakti', Mumbai distributor, Rakesh Sippy, points to cricket as a formidable opposition.
One thing seems abundantly clear. Even if audiences reject these two `different' films, at least their distributors will not run out of explanatory alibi!
