Delectable success story

It's not just the delicious food. It's even the service and pricing that make the newly launched Sangeetha, at Gandhi Nagar, a favourite destination for foodies.
|
EVER SINCE the new Sangeetha outlet opened on 1st Main Road, Gandhinagar, Adyar, it has been drawing foodies like a magnet. This road has become the Gourmet Walk dotted as it is with Hotel Traffic Jam, Sri Krishna Sweets (aaahh.. the ghee smell), Ming Court and now Sangeetha (phone: 4426554).
Be it a weekend or weekday, the Sangeetha parking lot is full. That's reason enough for me to land there. In the normal circumstances, a bandh ought to keep people at home. So we decided that it would be a perfect evening to dine out. But unfortunately a majority of Adyar-ites seemed to have had the same idea. The parking lot was full and we had to wait at least 15 minutes to get a table. The place was simply overflowing with diners.
The menu, each page topped with the pictures of musical instruments and their description, had more North Indian fare than Southern ones. Chaats, tandoori and even Chinese dishes were there. To think that I had classified Sangeetha as one of the traditional Udupi chains!
On recommendation we went in for chilli mushrooms (Rs.55) and cheese pav bhaji (Rs.30). The first done in Chinese style with capsicum and onion was good. The quantity too was impressive. The chaat, with cheese slices in the pav, was not bad either. Though the avial in the Adai-avial (Rs.28) combo was a wee bit sour, the adai was scrumptious. Smeared with melting butter and munched along with jaggery it was a fabulous treat for the price.
As the dinner progressed, the reason for such overcrowding became obvious. Among the dry fruit rava dosai (Rs.30), bindi channa (Rs.50), malai kofta (Rs.55) or the rotis ordered, not a single item failed to please.
There is a wide selection of ice creams for desserts too. Being partial to traditional sweets, we had badam halwa (Rs.18) and basundhi (Rs.20). Both were good, but the halwa with the heavenly aroma of ghee and saffron came first with me.
A word about the juices. There is a wide variety of fresh juices, flavoured lassis and milk shakes here. Our choices, orange punch (30) with orange, pineapple and fresh mint and lassi with grape juice (Rs.25) were simply lovely. A second visit if only to try out the various drinks is in order. The service was excellent. Plates were whisked away fast and dishes brought and served in the most unobtrusive way. All these were done at the peak time. Sangeetha has a winner here, no doubt.
