Digestible camera

A TINY digestible camera can identify the cause of gastrointestinal bleeding in most patients who could not be diagnosed with conventional imaging methods, researchers have said.

The camera is used to diagnose diseases such as Crohn's disease, gastrointestinal ulcers, and small bowel tumours.

Patients swallow the disposable vitamin-size capsule, which transmits thousands of images of the small intestine, including the upper and lower third that cannot be reached by external scopes.

The data is then analysed by the firm's software. Yoqneam, Israel-based Given Imaging's technology, was cleared last August by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for imaging to find disease in the small intestine.

There is a small risk — less than one per cent — of the capsule getting stuck, which requires either surgery or an endoscopy procedure.
