Drive to Disaster - Pollution on city roads
Launch special drives
WITH the huge increase in polluting vehicles on city roads, the topic of controlling vehicle pollution has assumed great significance. Unless drastic action is taken against vehicles that emit smoke in excess of the prescribed limit, including denying permission to ply, no remedy seems to be in sight. Even though there are laws, the ineffective ways they are enforced, make it necessary to launch special drives to contain air pollution. The following suggestions can be examined.
*Special teams to be formed to book polluting vehicles.
*All violating vehicles should be given 7 days to bring emission under the prescribed limits.
*Vehicles that are issued more than 3 tickets for violation should be confiscated.
*Transport vehicles more than 15 years old have to be banned.
*A 24 hour special cell should be formed which will take complaints from the general public about details of the vehicle, violating pollution norms. The nearest police station should be instructed to seize the vehicle immediately. Toll-free telephones should be made available for this purpose.
