Drive to Disaster - Pollution on city roads

Surprise checks necessary

POLLUTION is growing at an alarming pace and Chennai has the second largest decibel level (84) while the desirable is supposed to be something much lower (55). As a keen observer of the vehicular traffic in the city for the past decade, I find there are numerous agents contributing to this. Brick, sand, blue metal carriers and water tankers are the main culprits. Their blaring horns almost unnerve the other road users and thus they gain an upper hand in speeding through. Secondly, tampered silencers in autos make a thunderous noise. There is no technical advantage or edge in this recent passion among auto drivers. Doctors aver that constant exposure to such blaring sounds can lead to a variety of health ailments and calls for a blanket ban and it would do good to have surprise checks on horns and silencers to curb the menace to a large extent.
