Drive to Disaster - Pollution on city roads
Lessons from New Delhi
WITH a tremendous market potential for vehicle manufacturers, the motorcycle and the light motor vehicles are coming up in a big way in the country adhering to Euro x II and Euro x III norms. But it is not enough. Taking a cue from New Delhi authorities, who are hell-bent in the change of fuel conversion to CNG (from petrol\diesel) on a frenetic pace owing to their high level of pollution, could be helpful. Battery operated and solar powered vehicles should be given a serious thought.
Road space occupy only 10 per cent of the Chennai city area, as against 20 per cent in New Delhi. Total city area should be distributed and allotted for sponsorship by the collaborated multinationals and their level of funding determined on the basis of their market share and profit margins. Laying of roads and traffic signals, construction of bridges should be dealt in co-ordination with the pollution control board.
