Introduction

----- FROM THE large tree in the compound, to the big, black "grandma" light-switches. I love it all. The Shahabad stone floor lends a clean and orderly feel to the minimalistically done up 3000 sq ft restaurant. I opt to climb up the stairs (past the tandoori counter) and relax in the air-conditioned first-floor. Here, I meet, three great foodies, Usha Pillai of Touchtel, Johann Pillai of Vita Diagnostics and Pankil Shah of Sun Microsystems. Both Usha and Johann have been here more than six times and recommend the Gobi musallam, tangdi kebab and Shahi tukra. I value their recommendations and try out plenty of dishes.

Here's my tried and tasted opinion. Go for the kebabs, almost all of them are good. It is a kebab-lovers haven, for Rs. 275 you get a platter of 16 non-veg kebabs. Hariyali, chicken kali mirch, fish tikka, mutton kebabs and more. Order a garlic naan and you're all set for a great meal! Bengali food lovers will be delighted with the dohi maach and the shorshe maach (Rs.125) made with Rohu. Go for the biryani, only if you like it subtle and not overpowered by spices. Plenty of options for those looking for VFM (value for money), reasonably priced options, like the large kathi roll plump with chicken the veg and non veg thali (Rs 60 and Rs 75). Wind up with the crisp, golden jalebis (Rs. 35) and the warm, luscious gulab-jamun (Rs. 25). All this is made possible, because the Parkayasthas and Aloka Guptas ensure that they get the choicest meats, fly in the rohu and keep their Bengali cooks happy. So head towards Bay Leaf, 34, Ambujammal Street, Alwarpet, Chennai, Ph: 4996635/ 4996496. Open 12 to 3 p.m., 7 to 11p.m. Credit Cards accepted.

*Rakhi Agarwal, thanks for your recipe, will print it very soon. Have received some great recommendations for Annalakshmi restaurant and the new chaat section of Shri Mithai. We shall write about them in our coming issues.
