The 'Brite' smile
|
Say cheese to the new high-tech procedure that can brighten up a person's smile within a matter of one-hour at the The Dental Clinic in the city.

PEARLY WHITES are no longer just the forte of toothpaste ad models. The Dental Clinic managed by Dr. Vijailakshmi Acharya has just imported equipment that can brighten up a person's smile in an hour. It's called the BriteSmile Professional Whitening System and can lighten teeth by up to six or seven shades, claims Dr. Acharya.
Whiteness of teeth depends upon the enamel covering. Some people are born with thinner enamel, and in some cases it wears off with age. Other causes of yellowing and discolouration are the use of tobacco or paan and excessive consumption of coffee, soft drinks and tea.
BriteSmile uses a combination of a gel containing 15 per cent hydrogen peroxide and a "cool blue" light. The gel is daubed onto the teeth and subjected to the light for 20-minute periods. "It depends on the shade of whiteness that the patient wants. If he just wants to go two shades lighter, the time is less, but to go an entire six or seven shades lighter, it takes an hour," she explains. The results last for two to three years but depend on the person's lifestyle. "If you're going to continue guzzling litres of coffee or smoke packs of cigarettes, it's not going to last that long," she warns. And with proper care, the results can last longer, she adds. Gargling after drinking coffee or tea is one way to prevent stains.
BriteSmile can get rid of those stubborn stains within an hour but it costs a whopping Rs 15,000 for the sitting. The only known side effect is the slight tingling sensation for the next two days, says Dr Acharya. The system is simple, safe and effective. "It's about instant gratification. One visit, one hour and your teeth are shades lighter," says Dr. Acharya. The conventional methods of teeth whitening mean treatment over a period of weeks the patient has to wear custom made teeth trays filled with gel at home, visit the dentist for at least four or five sittings and the whitening takes place over a period of time. This customary system costs between Rs. 2000 and Rs. 5000.
The Dental Clinic is the only one offering the BriteSmile procedure in the whole of South India. The other machine of this kind is in Mumbai. Dr. Acharya says the treatment can be used for a confidence boost before a job interview, or maybe by a bride before her wedding or simply because someone wants a brighter smile. But she recommends that the patient comes in for treatment a couple of days before the actual event they are preparing for, to give themselves time to get rid of the tingling sensation it leaves after the procedure.
