At a crossroads

AT A time when Hindi films are crashing left right and centre, nobody is willing to guess what the future holds for Bollywood. There have been only two genuine hits this year — Vikram Bhatt's "Raaz" and "Devdas". Nobody is sure of what today's audiences' taste and which hero is hot! Bold and offbeat themes like "Humraaz" and "Deewangee" have been appreciated, while song and dance formula films of Hrithik Roshan and others have been rejected. Suddenly, top stars are feeling insecure and Shahrukh Khan, still a hot favourite with the trade will have his next release only in 2004 as he is not sure about the script! Aamir Khan does not want to do the run-of-the-mill commercial any longer. He along with his favourite director Ashutosh Gowariker is planning yet another period film on 1857 uprising. This mega budget film, with larger-than-life sets and high-class technology, may be funded by a Hollywood studio. Salman Khan who was till recently languishing in jail following the hit-and-run-case has no films in hand other than the remake of the Tamil hit, "Sethu" which is yet to find buyers. Rakesh Roshan is said to be re-shooting large chunks of "Koi Mil Gaya" an Indianised version of Steven Spielberg's "ET" which features his son Hrithik Roshan, the one time pin-up-boy of the new generation. And the biggest surprise is that, stars are finally reducing their prices in Bollywood for about 30 to 40 per cent! Still there are no takers for stars like Govinda whose film is lying unsold. Finally in Bollywood it is content that counts and not the stars any longer.
