Bring back the breeze

ARE BICYCLES a thing of the past? One wonders, considering that people are always in a hurry to get wherever they have to - be it the workplace or the movie hall. Cycles are not only non-polluting, but also keep us in good health. At a time when most of us seem too lazy or too much in a hurry to get on to a bicycle, Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) has organised a day-long festival to relive its romance. It has a number of programmes lined up for the World Cyclists Day, on November 10.

The programmes include a cycle rally and an eco-treasure hunt to tell us about the value of the non-polluting vehicle. The rally also hopes to persuade the Government to take a few policy initiatives that will encourage cycling, such as creating separate cycle lanes on one-ways, in new residential layouts, shopping zones, schools and college campuses, besides declaring one day in the week as "No Automobile Day". By and large, the idea is to revive respect for the cyclist, a value swept away by the endless stream of vehicles.

Those of us who still swear by the bicycle or are willing to be converted should head for YMCA on November 10. The rally starts from YMCA, passes through Nrupathunga Road, Hudson Circle, Kasturba Road, Raj Bhavan Road, Ambedkar Road, K.R. Circle, Nrupathunga Road, and heads back to YMCA. Cyclists will have to assemble at 9 a.m.. The eco treasure hunt is for people 15 years and above. Registration for these events begins at 11 a.m..

Slowpoison, a group of students and professionals working on environment, and Creditte, a Centre for research on environment and development, are also chipping in to make the World Cycle Day an meaningful one. Call 2211848/2240159 for details.
