Bouncing back

Jon Bon Jovi's fans can rock to his latest album, Bounce.

BON JOVI'S band is one of those all-time contemporary rock bands, which has carved a niche for itself. This is also one of the few bands, which has cannily changed its style of music with the changing trends and times. And that is why its latest album - Bounce - is more "rocky" and loud compared to its previous albums.

Bon Jovi's band comprises four members - Jon himself, as the vocalist and guitarist, Richie Sambora on the guitars, Dave Bryan on the keyboards, and Tico Torres on the drums.

Born in New Jersey, U.S., in 1962, Frank (Jon) Bon Jovi has a creditable solo music career with Destination Anywhere being his most popular work. This singer has also acted in a movie with the same. The Leading Man and Moonlight and Valentino are the other films he has acted in.

Jon Bon Jovi's entry into music and the formation of the band dates back to 1983. He started by getting himself a job of running errands, fetching coffee, and sweeping floors in one of New York's biggest recording houses - The Power Station Recording Studios - for a salary of 50 dollars a week. Apart from being busy with his job, Jon started to explore the empty studios at odd hours of the night, and with help of some junior composers, he made small demos and composed a few rough tracks. Soon he made full-fledged demo albums and got some managers of Record Labels to listen to them. One of the radio station managers was keen to play Jon's song "Runaway" which hit the airwaves, and went on to break quite a few records.

After "Runaway", everything happened fast - David Bryan and Tico Torres joined the party and Bon Jovi began to wow rock music enthusiasts the world over. After a hiatus of a few years, the band released its album - Crush - last year, with "It's My Life" evoking some rave reviews, and topping the charts in India as well.

"One Wild Night" was a live performance album, which was released next and included some of Bon Jovi's classic hits such as "You Give Love A Bad Name". Right now, Jon's latest album - Bounce - (Universal Music, Rs. 125) has hit music stores in India, and the track, "Everyday" is getting a massive airplay on the music channels.

But why choose a name like "Bounce" for an album? And Jon explains: "Bounce could mean the action of a ball, a kid jumping up and down, or it can address the enthusiasm of the band, or even our country (USA) in the face of adversities.

It can mean anything." If that sounds impressive, just listen to the lead lines of the first single "Everyday", which goes thus:

I had enough of crying;
Bleeding, sweating, dying;
Hear me when I'm going to live my life, everyday;
I'm going to touch the skies;
Spread the wings and fly;
I'm going to live my life, everyday...

"Three minutes of optimism" is how Jon Bon Jovi describes the group's style of music, and frankly we cannot find a better definition than that.
