Return of Namrata

Karrena Kapoor and Tushar Kapoor play the lead in `Jeena Sirf Tere Liye'

NAMRATA SHIRODKAR has been a `significantly beautiful' presence in `Pukar' and `Vaastav', but her career has never received the kind of boost it did when both `Hathyar' and `Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar' hit the screens on the same day.

Alas, neither film has scaled great heights in these gloomy times for Bollywood, but it looks as if Namrata is set to prove a point.

Namrata has had a long innings as a model, and waited several years in the wings for stardom.

Let's hope she survives in the not-so-kind world of showbiz.

Post-Diwali blues

THERE'S BEEN no good news from the box-office, and the crackers and diyas seem to have brought little cheer.

`Jeena Sirf Mere Liye', starring Tusshar and Kareena, in spite of the hype, has proved to be a damp squib. Collections have declined in just two days after the film's release. Also vying for washout credits is `Anarth', which is supposed to be facingproblems from distributors.

The film, which was supposed to have been released in the Nizam area on November 4, may be held up, with distributors backing out at the last minute.

According to Nester D'Souza, president, Cinematographers and Exhibitors Association of India (CEAI), the situation in the film industry is quite dismal. Diwali collections are on the decline.`Deewangee' seems to show some promise with its second week collections increasing during Diwali.

No one is saying `Waah Tera Kya Kehna' to Govinda's latest film either, because it's believed to be running to almost empty houses.

Ramzan has arrived, and that means less collections. The irony is that the white mouse of `Stuart Little 2' is doing better than the much-hyped stars of `Jeena Sirf Mere Liye'!

`Villain' versus `Bhagavathy'?

THINGS ARE much brighter in Chennai.

`Villain', starring Ajith, is said to be leading the race currently.

After no-shows like `Red' and `Raja', Ajith seems to be regaining some lost ground with `Villain'. K. S. Ravikumar must be breathing easy after a long time.

The carefully calculated move of having a retarded Ajith and a dashing, Robinhood-style Ajith (plus brother-brother sentiment) is wooing audience.Coming in a close second is Vijay's `Bhagavathy', which is also about two brothers. This tale, however, pivots on action and seems to emulate `Baba', with a lot of punch lines and `mudras' thrown in.

At No. 3, we haveVijaykanth's `Ramana', which has less action and verbal outpourings compared to a standard Vijaykanth-starrer. Silambarasan's debut vehicle `Kadhal Azhivathillai', produced and directed by his father, T. Rajender, is at No. 4. It's too early to say whether it will pick up or not in the days to come.

Another film bordering on `hit-or-miss' is Thankar Bachchan's `Solla Marantha Kadhai'.

Ben and J Lo are engaged

MAYBE BEN Affleck's mother is still keeping her fingers crossed, but Jennifer Lopez is flaunting a huge diamond ring. Her engagement to Ben Affleck is now official.

Ben's mother has a soft corner for his ex-girlfriend, Gwyneth Paltrow, according to rumours. Anyway, J Lo's is not fazed by her would be mother-in-law's preferences, and is said to have openly stated that she would love to have Ben father her children.

While she's not sure when she wants to have kids, she is sure that one healthy child would be sufficient for her.

The twice-married star claims that Ben was one of the biggest inspirations behind the romantic lyrics she recently penned for her forthcoming album. What will Ben's mother Chris Affleck do now?

Hot Tips:

-- `Villain' is the reigning hero, like it or not.

- Watch `Leela', starring Dimple Kapadiaand Deepti Naval. Check it out for old times' sake!

--`Stuart Little 2' is as good a reason for a sequel as `MIB2', and has the added advantage of making you look more kindly at your rodent neighbours!
