Theatricalism in Tikkana's works
Saahitya Surabhi, an association of lovers of Telugu literature, organised a seminar recently on Tikkana's poetry with a focus on the picturesque theatricalism embedded in his works.
Rambhatla Nrisimha Sarma of All India Radio, who is a noted literary critic, commentator and popular compere of cultural programmes put on air in studios and outside as well, stole the show eloquently speaking on this aspect in detail.
Tracing the origin of the induction of a dramatic effect in literature to the all-time great poet of the yore, Kalidasa in Sanskrit, Sarma proclaimed that the honour for not only pioneering the technique in Telugu literature but also achieving it an acme of glory should go to Tikkana Somayaji. His translation of 15 Parvas (chapters) of the Mahabharata comprised 16,457 narrations and descriptions in both prose and poetic diction. All these reflected an exquisite effort at dramatising even minor events and the reading made it interesting with a telling theatrical effect.
Quoting select passages both in the prose and poetic versions from the Udyoga, Bheeshma , Drona and Virata Parvams in particular, Rambhatla discerningly established how Tikkana remained a paragon non pareil effecting a thrilling visualisation of various events in the minds of the reader with his picturesque expression with artistic and aesthetic imagery.
The Sahitya Surabhi president, Vruddhula Kalyana Rama Rao, welcomed the gathering. Vedula Subhramanya Sastry initiated the discussion in which Peri Ramakrishna, Ramakoti, Upadrasta Sarvamangaleswara Sastry, Meegada Ramalinga Swami and M. Subbaraya Sarma took part.
