Breathe easy tips
Some facts and statistics: Each person needs 15 cubic feet of air per minute, to breathe.
19.5% children studying in schools, located in high-traffic zones are asthmatic, whereas only 11.5% of children from schools in residential areas are asthmatic. Good indoor air quality can reduce asthma by 65 per cent. Leaky, mouldy walls, rotten food or leftovers, cockroach droppings, dust mites, and cat urine or saliva... are all allergens that could trigger asthma in our houses. Cigarette smoke, mosquito coil fumes or colognes sprayed in front of children, can cause an attack. From 9 per cent 1979 to 24.5 per cent in 1994, asthma in children has been rising. The sudden jump was between 1984-89 when the City opened up to people from over the country.
What to do about it: Give your children breathing space. Don't put them in overcrowded schools. Live in houses that have lots of cross-ventilation and sunlight as that kills the dust mites. Avoid stuffed toys, carpets, heavy drapes, and upholstered sofas. Sun the mattresses every week. Swimming and breathing exercises help.
