New light on Annamayya
Annamaya was not only a guru of Emperor Saluva Narasimha Raya of Vijayanagar but also his childhood friend. It is unfortunate that the great singer is being portrayed as a jumping jack, wearing shorts in illustrations writes Abburi Gopalakrishna in his book, `Sri Annamacharya Yakshagana Sampradayam'.
"In those days court poets, who were close to the rulers had to dress like them. They were given royal treatment. Narasimha Raya gave him a crown, long flowing clothes and loin cloth," says Abburi.
He disputes the claim that Annamacharya had rendered exactly 32,000 kirtanas and feels that the figure could be either less or more.
The book "Annamacharyam charitram" written by Chinnanna gives a correct picture of the poet, he feels. Abburi refers to the inscription of the Penugonda ruler, Virupanna, which adorns the walls of the Lepakshi temple and says that Annamaya must have also worn similar clothes.
Commenting on the work, Velcheru Narayana Rao, a Professor in Wisconsin University describes it as "The best research work on the subject".
The book was released recently.
